Don't know where y'all are located - but I'm trying to get some impromptu jams together to spread some knowledge between shops and up the level everywhere. Have y'all done this where you're at? any tips?

I'm in Grand Rapids, MI - I know a long way from the west coast. How is coffee over there. Is it 1 decent coffee shop out of 10-12? I'm just trying to get people more excited about the art of it (from a proper pull to latte art) - love your icon.

in Oakland it's 1 in 15 (or seems so). There doesn't seem to be a "art of espresso" mentality. Most people think of it as an easy way to make some money, and slop it out.

Oh well, Thats why I exist, to educate and learn.

so - any barista getting together for technique and fun? Are you involved in the guild or SCAA or anything? Is there a lot of access to info?

I've actually only run into a couple of other people that really feel like Barista and there havn't been any jams here. However I used to work at Zoka in Seattle before moving to Oakland and had been trained Previously in Vivace style coffee and then trained by Dismiss @ Zoka.

I havn't joined the Guild yet, I'm waiting to determain where I'm going to stay (oakland or Seattle)

Yeah - people around here don't get the possibility of professional status in coffe either - yet. Our shop carried Vivace when we opened it - David Schomer is a mad genius. I've heard great things about Zoka. We currently use Intelligentsia at our drive-thru. I really wish we had a decent sit-down place, but I don't own it.
We HAVE been doing a fair amount of catering on a little La Pasquini and use a 2-group La Marzocca for large events. But we're on semi-super automatics for the shop.

I haven't really made in-roads into the Guild myself yet ( no real purpose until I can afford to travel to events)
              but
I'm trying to get the local retailers into jams as a fundraiser for local charities. Competition optional - latte art demos, etc.
We've been thinking about the west coast for a while -but it'll probably be a couple of years.
